Value Does All the Work While Colour Steals All the Glory

What truly makes a painting successful — colour or value?

In this course, we’ll explore the fascinating relationship between hue and value, discovering how light and dark quietly hold an artwork together whilst colour often takes all the attention.

Through a series of observational still life paintings, you’ll learn how to recognise and control tonal values, understand how colours carry their own hidden brightness and darkness, and discover why strong values can create depth, atmosphere, drama, and realism even before colour is introduced.

We’ll experiment with monochrome painting, tonal simplification, colour illusion, limited palettes, and expressive colour placement to uncover how artists use both value and hue to guide the viewer’s eye and strengthen composition.
