Term 1 2024 - Human Portraits

Dates:

9th September – Play, learn, listen to me talk a lot.

16th September – Crack on with the project or possibly more of the above.

23rd September – Be an artist

30th September - Be an artist

7th October - Be an artist

14th October - Be an artist

Options:

You can work in the medium of your choice.

You can create a portrait of whoever you want.

As always, the first session will be learning and trying things out. You do not need to know exactly what you are drawing/painting for this session, but here’s some things to consider over the summer:

Self-portrait with mirror

Pros - there’s no other face that you know better than your own. You will be the perfect sitter because you will keep still.

Cons – lighting will change, complexion can alter, hair will move.

Aim – to capture your essence rather than a photo realistic version of yourself.

How to make it easier – Work from a photo of yourself or at least have it as reference.

Fan Art

Pros – plenty of reference images available.

Cons – Professional photography can be hard to work from, particularly for celebrities who have hand picked the photos that hind all their lumps, bumps and insecurities. Quite often these are the things that allow an artist to really capture the subject.

Aim – to capture your celeb the way you “know” them. Why did you choose to draw/paint them? – Draw that!

Live model – Amanda has volunteered to be a live model this term as she will be physically unable to take part in the artwork (hand operation). The setting will be the same each week for you to draw/paint from life. Difficulty level for this one is higher than the others, but do not let this put you off! This is an art class and you’re here to learn and expand your comfort zone. Amanda will not be offended (I’ve tried and it’s hard to offend her!) by anything you might deem bad art – there is no such thing.

Pros – A live model is hard to find, take advantage of this opportunity.  Well that’s not technically true, because members have 10% off all my life drawing sessions at the studio – just saying…

Aim – to capture Amanda’s essence rather than a photo realistic version of her.

How to make it easier – take a photo and use alongside the life model as reference.

I would love for you to have a go at all the above. It would be great to move away from creating “a finished piece” for this term and just explore!
